I was good at mathematics and my math teacher was sponsor of the camera club. It was a natural fit! I borrowed my uncle’s Kodak Bantam 828 and away I went. I soon got my own camera, an Argus C-3. My junior year I moved up to medium format with a 2¼ x 3¼ speed graphic. In college, at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, I was photographer for the University Publicity Department, the newspaper, and the yearbook. During that time I worked with a 4x5 graphic. I was editor and photographer of the yearbook my junior year. I have never taken a formal photography course but learned my craft at the side of University photographer, Professor Nelson Smith, who became my mentor and friend. In my senior year (1960) I held a one man show at the University where I displayed 82 black and white prints and 6 color prints portraying industrial subjects, sports action, still life, campus scenes, and character studies. After university I worked for the US Department of Defense School System in Europe for 35 years. While there I took travel slides, always with an artistic twist, first with a 35mm Exacta V, then with a 35mm Nikon F. Since retiring to Hendersonville, North Carolina I have moved to Sony digital photography. I have displayed my work at the Biltmore Estate’s Deer Park Inn, Black Mountain Fine Art Center, Asheville Area Arts Council Gallery, Grace Center for the Arts, Haywood County Arts Council, Brevard Bluewood Gallery, TCArts Council in Brevard, West Asheville Bakery & Café, Hendersonville Art Council and Henderson County Library. I received a Best of Show" in 2012 at the Grace Center for the Arts, a “1st in Class” and was awarded the “Judges Choice” at the 2003 Western North Carolina State Fair and received an “Honorable Mention” at the 2003 Southern Council of Camera Clubs Print Competition, also an “Honorable Mention” at the Hendersonville Art Council in 2007. My photographs have appeared in "Our State, North Carolina", "Carolina Home & Garden", "The Rotarian", "NAWCC National Magazine", "The Laurel of Asheville" & "Bold Life". My work hangs in many homes and offices. I have an extensive collection of cameras dating from the 1880’s to the present and am currently selling all of my collection.
